FAQs
How it works
Do visitors need to download an app?
No. Dwel runs in the browser on the visitor's own phone; they scan a QR code or tap a link and they're talking within seconds. No app store, no account, no friction.
Do we need to buy or manage any hardware?
No. Dwel works on the devices visitors already carry. There's nothing to charge, sanitise, hand out or chase, and nothing for your team to maintain.
Does it work on all devices?
Dwel works on any modern smartphone or tablet with a browser, iPhone and Android alike.
Can it be branded to look like our existing digital channels?
Yes! The interface can be customised to reflect your brand logo, palette and fonts, so the visitor feels like they are in conversation with you, not Dwel.
Does it need WiFi or mobile data?
Yes. Dwel uses a live but lightweight connection, over your site WiFi or the visitor's own data.
How does Dwel know where the visitor is?
Dwel understands your place as a map of areas - galleries, halls, streets, concourses - and uses the visitor's location to ground every answer in where they actually are. That's what makes it feel like a companion rather than a chatbot.
The AI conversation
How do we control what the AI says?
Dwel only speaks from your verified content. You approve the knowledge base, the tone of voice and the boundaries. If Dwel doesn't know something, it says so and points visitors to your team rather than guessing.
How is this different from Gemini or ChatGPT?
Generalist AI is trained on the open web - it doesn't know your site, gets details wrong, and you have no control over what it tells your visitors. Dwel grounds the conversation in your content, knows where the visitor is standing, and represents your place, in your voice.
What if a visitor asks something off-topic or inappropriate?
Dwel politely steers the conversation back to your place. It won't be drawn into topics outside its role as your site's companion, and a profanity filter avoids inappropriate language from ever appearing on the screen or in spoken responses.
Do visitors know they're talking to an AI?
Yes. Dwel is clearly disclosed as an AI companion from the first interaction, with a prompt to check with site staff if anything seems off.
Content & data security
Is our content kept securely?
Yes. Your knowledge base is stored securely and remains private to your site - never shared with other clients and never used to train public AI models. You give Dwel license to access it for the sole purpose of the conversational companion, but ownership remains entirely yours.
Is visitor data stored securely?
Yes. Visitors don't need to create an account, conversations are encrypted in transit, and data is handled in line with UK GDPR.
What data do we get as a site?
You get a new form of GDPR-compliant, anonymised insight you can't get anywhere else: what visitors ask, where they ask it, what they're looking for and what they can't find. It's the closest thing to hearing every visitor conversation on your site.
What happens to our data if we delete our account?
Any data associated with your account is automatically and permanently deleted if you close your account.
Accessibility & languages
Can anyone use it?
Dwel is designed to be used by anyone capable of speech or typed input, and a finger they can hold on the device screen. It meets a wide variety of additional needs including hearing- and visually-impairment, plus many forms of neurodiversity in which a safe, non-judgmental 1:1 conversation with a digital entity can be more appealing than a human equivalent.
Can Dwel be used by non-English speakers?
Yes! Dwel converses naturally in many visitors’ own languages. The current list includes Mandarin, Arabic, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Portuguese and Japanese, but is growing all the time.
Environmental & Social
How does Dwel impact the environment?
Dwel needs no new physical estate. It runs entirely on devices visitors already carry, so there's no hardware to manufacture, install or dispose of - unlike screens, kiosks or other on-site infrastructure. The only resource it draws on is AI compute, and we treat that as a design constraint: we favour smaller, more efficient models wherever they perform just as well, and track the compute used per conversation as one of our own project metrics.
Does Dwel create jobs or replace them?
Dwel is additive, not a replacement. It frees your front-of-house and guide teams for the moments that really need a human touch, while opening up a measurable storytelling and advertising channel to smaller, local businesses that couldn't easily access one before.
Is Dwel designed to replace human staff?
No. Dwel is designed to complement human guides and support staff, not replace them. It offers a personal experience to every visitor who walks through your doors and speaks with the expertise and authority of your place, but it will always be second-best to a human-to-human experience, where available.
Does Dwel support local high streets and communities?
Yes. Value flows to wherever your place actually is - a high street, a retail estate, a mixed-use development - rather than to one tech hub. We're already piloting Dwel with local authorities like Camden Council as a tool for local economic development, building a model that other places and councils can adopt too.
Getting started
How long does it take to launch?
Live in less than a week. Dwel handles everything - setup, content ingestion and launch - with minimal lift from your team.
How much does it cost?
There's no upfront fee to get started with Dwel. Start on our Basic plan and pay nothing monthly - you keep 55% of any visitor revenue, and Dwel only earns when your Guide does. Want more control? Pro raises your share to 70% for a flat monthly fee, and Subscription turns the visitor payment gate off entirely so visitors never pay. Sign up now as one of our early customers and get three months on Pro free.
What does the early customer offer involve?
As one of our early customers, we tailor Dwel to your place and audience, run it live with real visitors on our Pro tier free for three months, and support you throughout with regular reporting. At the end you get a full review: what visitors asked, how they used it, and what continuing on Pro or moving to Subscription would look like.
How does Dwel work with my existing channels?
We can ingest content from any of your existing online sources - your website, social media channels and more - as well as PDFs and offline marketing materials, to build your knowledge base. We're also working on connectors to plug into other content you've already curated, including audio guides and Bloomberg Connects, with more on the way soon.
How do I market my Dwel-powered experience?
There are plenty of options, many of them along channels you already use: printed materials like posters, table talkers and signage, digital screens around your place, your website and social media, and ticketing platforms and other partner channels. We'll work with you to help create these materials where needed - and ready-to-use templates are available in our Templates downloads.
How do I get my QR code?
Once your Guide is live, a unique QR code is ready for you in your Dwel dashboard. Download it and add it to signage, posters, print materials or digital screens anywhere around your place.
